Into the Fire – Setting Inspiration

Into the Fire is set in Craterville Waspen. Craterville because it’s built in a basalt(or crater). And Waspen because it comes with a funny story.

If you’ve read my about me you know I was an emergency call taker for over 7 years. One time I took a call and someone was unable to identify the street name and I was said “You know what – I got you.” I looked at the map and it said Waspen. So for the entirety of the call I continued to type Waspen.

This is why you make people tell you the street name. One of my coworkers – love her to bits and pieces – finally turned and looked at me and asked “Why do you keep typing Waspen?”

Naturally I’m confused because that’s what the street name is. And she says, “That says W. Aspen (West Aspen).”

I zoom in on the name of the street and low and behold it 1000% says W. Aspen. And we laugh about it to this day. She’s one of the few people I told about the book and the first to read it so as an ode to her I had to use that in the book.

But the actual setting is based off of one of my favorite golf courses to go to in Portola Ca.. It’s in the middle of a forest. There are houses around but you can barely see them. The greenery is just *chef’s kiss*. There are trees everywhere. One road that takes you in and out. The people are always so nice!

My boyfriend and I try to go a few times a year but for sure once a year. Normally we go in the winter time and stay a few days. It’s a super small town, so small that the entire town shuts down Monday’s & Tuesday’s. Which is obviously our favorite days to go.

And in the summer time I like to caddie for my boyfriend while he plays a round.

It’s pretty off the grid – the phone service is poor – so it’s a nice way to reconnect with one another and disconnect with our day to day lives.
